Person, Place or Thing ‘Trailer’

Writer & Director

Narrative Short Film / 17 min

Alexis is a drifter who takes comfort in her invisibility while living in her car on the streets of Portland, Oregon. When the routine of her solitary life is interrupted by an unexpected encounter, Alexis must choose between preserving her anonymity or reconnecting with the world around her. Martini explores the way a person may navigate the difficulties of life by isolating and detaching from the world. She takes an inside look at how we often mask our true desire as a means of self-preservation.

Reviews

"Elle Martini's PERSON, PLACE OR THING is a gem. Its backdrop is where Dostoevsky meets Taxi Driver -- dark, gritty, anything but uplifting, and not where you'd expect a viewer's heart to open. But mine did. The subject matter is fertile ground for moralizing or sentimental sympathy. Martini avoids both with a subtle hand that makes for much more impact. What a fine film."

“After viewing PERSON, PLACE OR THING, it is clear to me that Elle Martini is a filmmaker who will make her mark on this art form. In just a few short minutes, she managed to not only capture the essence of the character and tell me a great story, but I truly wanted more… Much more. There is a new heroic bubbling its way up into our culture that focuses more on interconnectedness and internal development than on external conquest. Elle clearly has her finger on this pulse and I believe that the trademark of her filmmaking will be depth and soulfulness.”

“In PERSON, PLACE OR THING, the protagonist Alexis is radioactive; she's breaking the rules of society by deliberately occupying the margin. Her character is both a secret and a promise, and one leaves this short film with the sense of having watched a seedling unfurl in the dark ground. Portland, Oregon, is the territory where this story grows, and the city is a character on its own, glowing and disappearing, and haunting us. This short is protein-rich with potential."

"PERSON, PLACE OR THING was the highlight of the four films in the first Shorts Program. Following a woman who lives in her car, it established a down and dirty mood and carried the mood throughout.”

“PERSON, PLACE OR THING could have twisted in any direction, but did not. The characters remained plausibly enigmatic throughout the piece.”
